My mother, Kathleen Connors experienced kidney failure due to a misdiagnosis by her doctor when I was 9 years old. She almost died of septic shock & was rushed to Westchester Medical Center where emergency surgery was conducted to install a dialysis tube. This was a life changing experience for our entire family-Dad & Sister Karen. After undergoing dialysis & hemodialysis for almost 2 years, Arthur, her brother who was a perfect 6 out of 6 match, donated a kidney to her because he couldnt stand to watch her suffer with two small children. The transplant was performed in February of 1982 at NY-Presbyterian/Columbia Medical Center and was a successful operation. She was a model patient for 22 years, when her doctors told her that the Immunosuppression drugs promoted cancerous growths. The options were presented to stay the course but closely monitor or switch to Rapamune and risk the kidney failing. Cancer developed & she passed away in 2003...We miss her so much!!!
